How long to complete Comm Matrix Test?

Joy!

I am new to this site and have never used the Communication Matrix online assessment before.  I am a school SLP considering using this to assess a pre-K student who presents as having limited verbalizations.  I would like to have his teacher and parent fill out the test, but I am not sure how long this will take. I want to be considerate of their time (which, I'm sure is already limited).  On average, with a good internet connecton, how long does it take to complete the Communication Matrix online?

I completely agree with Kelly, however, I have found that both parents and teachers need an SLP present when completing the Matrix--at lest the first two or three times. I used to let them complete it on their own time, but found that in the long run it was wasted time. Our results were almost always so very different, when upon analysis and discussion it was revealed that they really didn't understand how to interrupter behaviors as communication. I complete it with them now, and their understanding of the Matrix and their student's/child's communicative behaviors has improved tremendously!

  • Welcome to the Matrix Community of Practice site!

The nice thing with the timing of the Matrix is that you can go through the matrix several times with one student. So I always suggest to new people, that you go through it once yourself. Then you will have a good idea of how much time it will take your teacher and your parent to go through it. If you each do the matrix separately, you can compare your findings.

The timing question is a difficult one because it can be five minutes to 45 minutes, depending upon the skills of the student. This is why I always suggest that you go through it ahead of involving others.

You can also do a preview that essentially doesn't count by doing the "TRY IT" (This is the first section when you click on ASSESSMENT at the top) Go to the Orange Section. Everything in Orange is the Assessment ; Everything in Blue is the Community. Also under the ASSESSMENT, right next to TRY IT, is the HOW TO USE section, Here you will find 5 short videos - these will give you a quick look at the assessment.

Give it a try! you can't mess up - you always have 30 days to go back and change your responses. So even if you do start an Assessment with a parent or a teacher, if you run out of time - it's okay - you have 30 days to come back and finish.

HI Lori, I agree. I wasn't saying to not be with the parent or teacher and make them go it alone. My suggestion was about having the SLP do a run through by themselves prior to the teacher or parent, so that they knew how long it would take, as well as get a sense of the questions.

Given that, we have had some teachers (me for one and several this grant rotation) who have enough experience with language to be able to complete the matrix themselves. And doing these separately can make for a nice comparison. So I think as with almost everything, the response probably would have been better for me to say, it depends upon the language level of experience of the parents and the staff.

But as for the time response.. of how long does it take - so much does go into it. How comfortable is someone with the computer or iPad, how comfortable is someone with the terms of language? So for me, who ever first finds the Communication Matrix - I typically suggest that they do one first, and then either recommend for others to do one or help other through one.
