Miami-Dade County Public school system has shared a resource that they have created for their teachers. It is for everyone to know how to most effectively use AAC tools that are in their classrooms, as well as the strategies that support the development of communication. They describe it well to staff as "No AAC device or picture communication system stands alone. Just as children need interaction and reinforcement from adults to learn to speak, they will need the same attention to learn to use AAC. It is helpful to think of learning to use AAC as learning a new language." Strategies are put into these major categories, that are lessons from research and best practices. 1) Use the daily routine as a framework 2) Use motivating messages 3) Model use of AAC 4) Give cues and wait time 5) Practice the prompt hierarchy 6) Build empowerment, initiative and ownership 7) Provide feedback 8) Sabotage 9) Keep materials accessible 10) Use symbol system The full set of information can be found at this website: http://prekese.dadeschools.net/AdaptationStation/aac.html#model

I really like this checklist of strategies to try when using and implementing AAC. I have printed this list and have given it to all of the assistants and have put a list in each of my students goal notebooks. This is also a good check for myself when elevating how to proceed with daily lesson planning and on how to incorporate effective strategies of teaching and using AAC tools within my lessons.
