Making Choices with Eye Gaze

Due to physical limitations, many of my students primary mode of communication is eye gaze. For some students I am attempting to use a 4-corner choice communication board, which is essentially a piece of cardstock paper that has a window cut in the middle and a visual choice (high contrast images for my students with visual impairments) on each corner, that enables students to communicate a choice by focusing their gaze on one of the selected items displayed on the board. For some students, 4 choices is too overwhelming or is too difficult to try to scan all 4 pictures. For those students, I provide 2 choices presented horizontally in order to make it easier for them to scan the options and focus on a choice. I am continuing to use the eye-gaze software to work on strengthening students eye gaze scanning and tracking skills.

I attended an excellent session at the ASHA convention this past November. Michael Clarke from the University College London presented his research on eye pointing vs. eye gaze. Since I attended that, I have taught one of my students to look at the symbol and then at my to communicate clearly that's my choice. She shows good success.
